Destiny has big plans for 16-year-old Jenny Martinson. Or maybe it's all a mythtake.
Like any typical teen, Jenny has questions about life, fate and destiny. Such as Why are hideous creatures trying to kill her? Is her father actually a c-list god? Is she really the ruler of a mythical realm - and the prophesied destroyer of its enemies? And finally, how will all of this impact her love life?
From the honky tonk shores of Lake George, NY to a fortress at the edge of an alternate universe, Jenny and her two best friends will face the terrors of fantastic creatures, dark magyks, hovering mothers and a clueless guidance counselor.
Humor. Adventure. Fantasy. Sarcasm. Welcome to the The War On Destiny Book One. A young adult novel recommended for ages 13 and up, and fans of humor and fantasy.
The War On Destiny Book One edition by J Sciancalepore Children eBooks
I was told that this book was a tale for young adult readers; the first surprise was how much this retired senior enjoyed it. Among the other surprises was the wonderful blend of humor (there were true laugh out loud moments throughout) and the multiple levels on which this novel can be read and interpreted. The rest of the surprises need to be kept secret for the uninitiated. On the surface this capture and escape fantasy was fun, fast paced and only slightly predictable. Underneath was a wealth of cogent philosophical concepts causing more than a moment of post reading discussion. A good book club book.
A smashing success for this first time author. And perhaps the strongest accolade: "I didn't want it to end."

The War On Destiny Book One edition by J Sciancalepore Children eBooks Reviews
While I'm not a "young adult" either, I too really enjoyed this book! I loved the playful use of language and enjoyed the characters. I don't normally read fantasy, but this kept me turning pages to find out where the story would take me. Now, I'm hooked, and can hardly wait for the second book in the series!
This book was hilarious, & very well-written. Although its category is for young adults, anyone young at heart of any age ( including myself in the mid-60's ) will most likely find this book enjoyable.
It stands on its own, but because it was such a good, funny, & unique story, with endearing & well developed characters, I am hoping for sequels!
Can I just say how much I love the lead? Unlike many young female leads (wishy-washy and waiting to be saved), Jenny kicks butt. (subtle spoilers ahead) She's smart, funny, pretty, can't stand the mean girls, has a date with the hunky football player and has nerdy boys for friends. (Ok, I still wouldn't mind being her). She's definitely my favorite part of the book! The Potter series aside, I haven't read many fantasy books, but this book was a fun read. The humor and characters kept me going. And there are definite hints at what may happen in Book Two. Team Jenny!
I bought this a while back and put it in line behind the others, but I wish I'd brought it to the front. A good, well-paced read and a modern take on the genre. Plenty of fun and sharp dialogue. My only misgiving was some of the pop culture references give the novel a fresh-by-date so to speak. Will certainly get the next book. I need to know what happens.
I'm not quite a "young adult" but that didn't stop me from really enjoying this novel. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible, or anything else by Joss Whedon should feel right at home here - though this is no rip-off by any means.
A story obviously written by someone with a deep love of fantasy... yet it doesn't take itself quite as seriously as that overwrought genre often does.
Fun characters, witty banter and a great story... what else can you ask for?
...more please!
