It's the year 2124, and humanity has achieved the ability to travel faster than the speed of light--thanks to a greater understanding of quantum physics.
The starship MINERVA is built to test this new FTL (faster-than-light) drive which will take its crew farther into space than anyone has ever gone before; however, there's a catch no one knows exactly where the ship will end up after it's launched--except that it won't be in a black hole, sun, or anything of substantial mass.
The story is told from the point-of-view of twenty two year old Kim Ferox, the MINERVA'S second-in-command. She was a hightly decorated lieutenant in Terra's Black Navy, and well connected enough to get the gig.
She also makes for a very compelling narrator--compelling enough that once I started reading MINERVA I couldn't put it down.
In addition to the suspense, and all of the ACTION, I also liked the way the author made the intriguing, cutting-edge science mentioned in the book understandable to a not-so-scientific reader like me.
It's a fairly quick (lightning novel), action-packed read science fiction readers won't regret checking out.
